FALLEN soldiers in the First World War were honoured with a unique poppy display organised by residents and Army representatives.

Troops from the Yorkshire Regiment in Catterick decorated the railings of Friary Gardens in Richmond this weekend.

The Richmondshire Remembers group organised the event to honour those from the Green Howards Regiment who lost their lives during the Kaiserschlacht offensive – one of the largest in the war.

The names of those who fell in the battle – from March 21 until April 5, 1918 – were displayed alongside large poppies.

Gregan Davis, Richmondshire Remembers co-ordinator, said: “It is vitally important to keep telling the story of the sacrifice and bravery of previous generations who have enabled us to live our lives in peace and freedom.”
