A YOUNG swimmer with Down’s Syndrome is celebrating after setting records and being picked for the national team.
The achievements of 13-year-old Harvey Stonebank were recognised at Richmond Dales ASC’s annual presentation evening, which also saw head coach Chris Dove receive runner up in Swim England’s Coach of the Year award.
Mr Dove was full of praise for Harvey who has set records in European and World Junior Mosaic Down Syndrome freestyle, butterfly and backstroke.
The youngster, of Middleton Tyas, has now been chosen for Team GB at the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) World Championships in Canada in July.
Another swimmer at the club, Chris McDonnell, 26, has also been selected subject to obtaining qualification times.
Mr Dove said: “What Harvey has achieved over the past 12-18 months has been phenomenal with him making such an impressive improvement, this is down to the hard work and dedication that Harvey applies on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.”
