AN a capella group is putting on a show in Durham ahead of taking part in an international competition.

Northern Lights, a group of 15 Durham University students, is putting on the show at the Gala Theatre on Monday, February 5, before its first heat of a competition which features in the hit film Pitch Perfect.

They will be performing alongside youth choir Urban Voice, which recently performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

President Bethany Wright, an anthropology student, said: “This show is our biggest yet. Expect not only singing but also choreography, beat-boxing and rap.

“We have been working so hard to give a melodic masterpiece with completely new material. We are especially excited as this concert will mark the first time a university group has reached beyond the student body to incorporate a fantastic local choir.”

Bass Logan Williams, a PhD student, said: “Singing is the most bodily form of making music, it quite literally comes from inside of us. I think A Cappella turns all music into a personal experience.

Every instrument is a person and we feel their emotions their love for music, and their excitement all in a voice. It’s amazing what we can do with just our voices.”

Tickets are £10, or £8 for concessions, and are available from the Gala box office or by visiting www.galadurham.co.uk.

The concert starts at 7.30pm.
