A PERSON has been killed after being hit by a train between Darlington and Durham.

British Transport Police said officers were called to the line close to Embles Lane, near Aycliffe village at 10.10am.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson said: "Officers have attended the scene alongside paramedics. Sadly the person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers will now look to establish the person’s identity and inform their family.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

A file will be prepared for the coroner. 

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We responded to a call at 10.10am to an incident on the railway near Newton Aycliffe.

"We sent two resources to the scene."

The incident is causing disruption to journeys between Darlington and Newcastle.

Virgin Trains East Coast says trains between the two stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes.

Services affected include the CrossCountry between Plymouth / Penzance and Glasgow Central, between Birmingham New Street and Edinburgh / Newcastle, and also between Southampton Central / Reading and Newcastle.

The TransPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Airport and Newcastle is also affected.

Disruption is expected to last until 1.30pm.
