AS Tommy Wright sets about making further additions to the Darlington squad, the manager does not wish to see any more players leaving the club – but he has not ruled it out.

A week ago Adam Bartlett and Mark Beck were sold to York City and Harrogate Town respectively, the goalkeeper making a penalty save on his Minstermen debut at the weekend.

David Ferguson leaving Quakers last month, as well as the elusive Paulo Mendes being released, means finances are available for Wright to use on new signings, with several players expected to join Darlington this week.

He has lined up two players from a fellow National League North club, plus a striker is believed to be keen on working with Wright again having played for him elsewhere.

The manager had hoped to have made additions before Saturday’s trip to Kidderminster Harriers, a 3-3 draw that saw Josh Heaton handed his debut after signing on Friday, but the transfer of a couple of targets were delayed.

Wright said: “Two players have already gone out, we’ve signed one but we haven’t really replaced Fergy. So really three have left, Chris Hunter is injured and we have been a little bit short.

“If I’m going to bring players in this week there are going to be individuals that are going to spit their dummies out a little bit, that’s part and parcel of football – everyone wants to play.

“But I want a strong squad, the club know I do, so there’s no pressure to get people out of the door, but things can happen quickly in football.”

Quakers did not have a keeper on the bench at Kidderminster and are understood to be considering their options.

Heaton was signed from Ramsbottom United, two divisions below Quakers, and Wright says the 21-year-old will improve.

The manager said: “His fitness needs working on a little bit. You can see what he’s all about – he’ll win his headers, there were times when I expected him to be a little bit more dominant.

“I wasn’t particularly happy with Kidderminster’s first goal, but altogether I was happy with his contribution and he will only get better.”
