A £2M project to improve roads in Hambleton is to take place over the next two months.

North Yorkshire County Council will begin improving roads in and around Thirsk and elsewhere in the district as part of its ongoing maintenance programme.

Work in Thirsk is scheduled to start on Monday, 16 October, and involves resurfacing Market Place, Millgate, Bridge Street, Stammergate and Long Street in the town. The work will be done at night, from 7pm to 5am, and roads will be closed during the working hours, but open during the day. Completion is expected by November 3, depending on the weather.

In November, Long Lane through Picton village will be resurfaced and patching will be carried out on Back Lane in preparation for surface dressing of the road next year.

Resurfacing will also take place around Felixkirk and Quarry Banks near Carlton Husthwaite from the A19 to the Spring Lane junction.

In addition, the County Council will carry out patching on nine further stretches of road in the area to prepare them to be surface dressed next year.

The council said surface dressing offers a quick, efficient and cost-effective way of maintaining skid-resistant and waterproof road surfaces, helping to prevent deterioration.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, executive member for highways, said: “This work is part of our ongoing commitment to maintain the county’s extensive road network, including rural routes. For the resurfacing in Thirsk, we’ll be using a surface course which is quicker to lay than traditional methods, so minimising the disruption to the public.

"The resurfaced roads will also be quieter."
