VIC Reeves has confirmed his starring role in Coronation Street, describing his signing as a “thrill”.

The 58-year-old, who grew up in Darlington, famous for his comedy partnership with Middlesbrough’s Bob Mortimer, will play television presenter Colin on the ITV soap.

The avid Corrie viewer will begin filming a three-month stint in July and will make his debut in late summer.

Reeves, real name Jim Moir, said: “I’ve been a lifelong fan of Corrie; in fact, I think I saw the very first one. I try not to miss any episodes.

“I’m really looking forward to acting in Corrie. “It’s a real thrill to be part of a British institution.”

Coronation Street executive producer Kieran Roberts said: “Jim is such a well-loved entertainer and a brilliant actor so we’re thrilled he’s joining the cast of Coronation Street.”

His television presenter character comes to Weatherfield to film with Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) and Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) after they are chosen to make an appearance on his show.

But Colin soon finds himself embroiled in the lives of other street residents.

The Shooting Stars funnyman has previously spoken of his ambition to join the cobbles.

“I have watched Corrie since I was little and I have never ever missed an episode.

“For me it’s the greatest TV,” he said.

“I would love to be on Corrie.

“It would make my life complete.”

Other famous faces to have set foot on the cobbles over the years include actor Sir Ian McKellen, comedian Peter Kay, rock band Status Quo and Geordie actor Tim Healy.
