A DARLINGTON man celebrated his 100th birthday with a winning bet.

As a life-long horseracing fan, Percy ‘Jack’ Johnson still enjoys a flutter now and again.

His milestone celebrations were given an extra boost when his horse came in, making his birthday bet a winner.

Mr Johnson also enjoyed a party with his family and friends at The Lawns Care home.

Born in Aycliffe Village in 1916, Mr Johnson went on to enjoy a rich life.

He began his working days cutting hay before running a general store in Haughton village with his wife, Peggy.

Mr Johnson also worked as a supervisor at Cummins and retired at the age of 72, ending his career helping young offenders in Newton Aycliffe.

He spent 40 years living in Coatham Mundeville where he kept pigs and hens and enjoyed growing his own produce.

Throughout his life, Mr Johnson has enjoyed horseracing and remains a keen dominoes player.
