A TEENAGE boy with Asperger syndrome has discovered a hidden talent for writing after making his debut as an author with a published novel.

Jack Michael Cornish, of Chilton, found inspiration from Richmond Castle for his first book, a fantasy novel called “Princess at Hells Rift.”

The 14-year-old took an interest in reading and writing after learning about the Harry Potter series at at school.

“When I started writing I hoped that it would end up becoming a book one day but I didn’t think it would happen.” Jack said.

“I enjoy writing, it helps me to relax. I’m already working on a sequel and have a few other projects going on as well.”

Jack’s first novel is set in the 15th century and tells the story of a young princess who is torn between betraying a vow or letting her kingdom plunge into eternal night.

Jack’s father, Paul, said: “It’s absolutely astounding, we are just so proud of Jack.

“With Asperger’s children there can be a difficulty understanding things so for him to do something like this is just amazing.

“Jack finds himself when he is writing and this helps keep things calm.

“When he started writing his novel the dream was always to publish it and with the help of his school we have managed to do that.”

Jack is a pupil at The Oaks, Spennymoor, and a member of the student council.

Helen Crawford, deputy head teacher at The Oaks said: “One of our teachers, Catherine Lister, set up a lunch time writing club that Jack attended and once his book was finished I was able to put Jack in touch with a friend to help him get the book published.

“We are obviously really excited, we are very ambitious for all of our young people and it’s great to see Jack doing so well.”

Mr Cornish added: “When we saw the draft copy of the book we thought it was great, and we are so grateful to everyone who has helped Jack along the way.

“We have donated a copy of the book to Jack’s school and hope that other people enjoy reading it.

“We think Jack will be an inspiration to others with similar conditions and struggles and may give them hope that if you have a dream you should follow it.”

Jack’s book, Princess at Hells Rift, has been released onto Amazon and is available to buy now for £4.99.
