CRICKET was cancelled at more than one place in Chester-le-Street yesterday.

Pupils at Bullion Lane Primary School, in Bullion Lane, were due to play kwik cricket as part of their healthy school day.

But the torrential rain meant that all outdoor activities had to be cancelled, just like the England Test match at the nearby Durham County Cricket Club ground, Riverside.

Youngsters enjoyed a healthy breakfast with parents in the school hall, which consisted of cereals, toast, pineapple, strawberries and a range of fruit juices.

Pupils designed posters to promote good health and took part in health-related quizzes.

Yesterday afternoon, deputy headteacher Margaret Lloyd learned that the school had achieved healthy school status and announced the news after the quiz.

She said: "That was the icing on the cake. We knew a decision was going to be made this week and decided to hold a healthy day anyway. Everybody was really excited when I told them about our new status."
