A COUNCIL campaign aiming to bridge the gaps between men and women in County Durham has been launched.

Durham County Council's Bridging the Gaps campaign aims to end discrimination and harassment and promote respect between men and women who live in, work in or visit the county.

Council staff working on the campaign will look to improve boys' performance at school, encourage men and women to apply for jobs at all levels of the council and include a wide range of people in consultations.

The transport needs of men and women will also be analysed.

Councillor Michele Hodgson, Durham County Council's Cabinet member for corporate services, libraries and culture, said: "Improving equality for all is an important part of our responsibility for community leadership.

"We want everyone to be treated with respect, dignity and fairness.

"Both men and women can face a number of barriers in accessing services, employment and training.

"Bridging the Gaps sets out some of the action we will take to promote gender equality."
