SCORES of veterans of the road are revving up ahead of this weekend's annual recreation of the inter-war year reliability and endurance trials amidst the tough North Pennines terrain.
The 46th Beamish Run sees a field of 154 entrants tackling the 150-mile route over hill and dales, on mainly rural roads of County Durham and North Yorkshire, on Sunday (June 19).
Lovingly restored and maintained classic and vintage cars and motorcycles, dating from 1922 to 1960, will set off from the events field at Beamish Museum in one minute, or 30-second intervals in the case of the two-wheeled competitors, from 8.15am.
Most will reach the now long-established one-hour lunch-time stop on the village green in Bainbridge, North Yorskhire, between 11.30am and 2.30pm, with the first finishers expected back at the open air museum site, near Stanley, from just after 4pm.
Traditionally held on the third Sunday in June, which usually falls on Father’s Day, it offers maximum daylight hours for some of the less able participants to ensure they complete the course well ahead of dusk, as the stragglers are given up to 7pm to make their return to Beamish.
Along the way, the course is staffed by 110 volunteer marshals from motoring clubs round the region, with a back-up ‘fix-it’ crew to aid both stricken motorcycles and cars, bringing up the rear.
Participants are tested not only on their driving skills, but also on the rules of the road, at the nine checkpoints on the course.
The winners of different classifications are judged on a mix of their finishing time and scores on the checkpoint tests.
Among the field is a now run regular, Beamish Museum director Richard Evans, who usually goes the whole hog in period costume.
He will be at the wheel of entry number 153, a 1948 Wolsley Saloon, which has been patched up by expert restorers on the continent, after a prang on route last year saw him limp back to Beamish.
Last year’s overall winner, Ian Bean from Consett, is back to defend his title on an AJS 350CC, the oldest motorcycle in the field, sponsored by the Friends of Beamish Museum.
Organiser George Jolley, who with his wife Maureen, will act as course opening flag marshal, said: “When I go round the course, even in a modern car, you know you’ve been on a testing drive, but it’s so much more interesting in an older vehicle.”
Like the competitors he is hoping for a mechanically trouble-free event and that the sun makes a welcome return.
