HUNDREDS of Cub Scouts attended a Durham Cathedral service to celebrate 100 years of the organisation.

About 500 Cubs and other members of the Scout movement gathered for the Saturday afternoon (April 23) celebration, which also marked St George’s Day.

The history of Cub Scouting was told through songs and sketches and the Right Reverend Paul Butler, the Bishop of Durham, delivered an interactive sermon.

Afterwards, the Cubs lined up outside the Cathedral for an inspection by Sue Snowdon, the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham.

David Baker, 1st Framwellgate Moor Cub Scout Leader, said: “It was really nice to see so many current and former members gathered together.

“Many of the young people also said they are interested in becoming leaders once older because it looks like so much fun.

“We hope that those who attended enjoyed the event and go on to have many more adventures in this, our centenary year.”
