INSIDE Steve Backshall there remains a small child, eyes full of wonder at the big wide world.

He may have seen and done most of what the world of wildlife has to offer, but he retains the kind of enthusiasm that would have you believe it was his first day in the job.

It’s a trait that he shares with the audience of children who thronged to see him in the flesh in Harrogate on Thursday night.

Normally viewed through the medium of television, via his Deadly 60 programmes, this was a chance to see the man up close and he didn’t disappoint.

Unlike some, Steve treats the kids as equals, refusing to dumb down his show in the mistaken belief they won’t understand, while at the same time delivering the information in a fun way.

It’s not ground-breaking or hi-tech, just Steve and a video screen, recalling his adventures and sharing his knowledge of the animal kingdom.

Knowledge his young audience have clearly soaked up.

For while there are those who believe TV to be some form of evil presence in their home, used responsibly, it can also be an incredibly powerful learning tool.

That point was hugely evident when Steve quizzed those gathered on some, at times obscure, animals. While the parents were left scratching their heads and wishing they had Google to hand, the kids just shouted out the answers.

I couldn’t help but think that while he didn’t show it, that must have been a source of immense pride for Steve, to know the effect you can have young minds.

Who knows, one day, it could be one of them on that stage inspiring the next generation of wildlife heroes.
