PEOPLE are being encouraged to wear neon to raise much needed funds for a charity which supports people who are blind and partially sighted.

Guide Dogs is calling on schools, colleges, businesses and community groups in the region to wear neon during Guide Dog Week, which runs from October 3 to 11.

People can also organise events, including coffee mornings, quiz nights, zumbathons, bake sales and wine tasting evenings to raise money for the charity, which receives no government funding.

Susan Collis, from Darlington, lost her sight at the age of 32 and with a young daughter felt her independence and confidence diminishing.

After being matched with her guide dog Toby, she is now able to take her daughter to school, like any other mum and has also regained her confidence and independence.

"I feel so confident and proud, absolutely amazing,” she said.

“I'll be getting noticed in neon this Guide Dog Week so that more people can benefit from the independence a guide dog can bring. I hope lots of people will join me."

Pippa Turner, community fundraiser for Guide Dogs added: "Getting noticed in neon is a fun variation on a dress down day.

“Dig out your legwarmers, bright socks, wigs, jewellery and outrageous make up to join in and have some fun whilst supporting a brilliant cause."
