A PROLIFIC Darlington burglar is now behind bars.

Michael Hall, of Northgate, Darlington, was jailed for five years at Teesside Crown Court last week after raiding 21 houses across the town.

The 38-year-old would try door handles in the early hours hoping to come across an insecure door or window and steal property while the homeowners slept upstairs.

Detective Constable John Tyers, of Darlington CID urged people to lock their doors and windows at night or when leaving their property unattended.

“I do hope it’s of some comfort or even closure for all the victims now knowing the person who illegally entered their home and stole their property is now behind bars for a long time,” he added.

“This defendant would target homes via an insecure door or window which had been mistakenly left unlocked usually at night time so I’d like to appeal to the people of County Durham and Darlington to be vigilant and take a moment to be sure your home is secure before retiring to bed and also when going out.”
