THE annual Perseid shower reached its peak overnight, with more than 100 meteors crossing the sky every hour.

Northern Echo photographer Tom Banks captured this image of the spectacular from Coxhoe, County Durham.

The shower is visible from mid July to late August.

To get the best view, get out into the countryside as far from artificial light as possible.

The meteors are visible to the naked eye – there is no need for a telescope or binoculars.

Use a reclining chair or sun lounger, or lie on the ground, and the meteors could appear from any direction.
