A YOUNG boy’s kind-hearted tooth fairy donation, which was inspired by his 'Baba', looks set to raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

Oliver Williams, from Ingleby Barwick, near Stockton, chose to donate the £4 he received from the tooth fairy for having four teeth removed in an operation to a lung cancer charity.

The seven year-old’s grandmother, who he calls Baba, was diagnosed with cancer a year ago and has been undergoing hospital treatment.

After his mam Jenny posted details of the gesture on Facebook, they were overwhelmed by comments from people saying they too would pledge £4.

The Northern Echo:

All smiles: Oliver

An online fundraising page has since been set up and to date has raised more than £400 for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Mrs Williams said: “I’m just so proud of Ollie and want the world to know just how selfless and kind he is.

“He is a caring young boy who adores his family and is exceptionally close to his grandma, who he has a unique bond with.

“Ollie had to have an operation to have two teeth out, but the hospital ended up taking four. He never got them back!”

A pupil at Ingleby Mill Primary School, his class has now joined in with the fundraising with his friends saying they too will donate any money from the tooth fairy to the cause.

Mrs Williams added: “He suggested donating the money himself without any prompting and is really shocked about how much has been raised already. Our target was £50 which we’ve already smashed.

“We really hope this will gather momentum and make a big difference for lung cancer research.”

Ben Blackman, director of fundraising at the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, said: “When I heard about what Oliver did for us, it lit up my day. I donated straightaway and he has inspired me, my family, our staff team and so many of our supporters.

“It’s such a thoughtful and generous gesture from a very kind, brave boy.”

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation was named after the entertainer and broadcaster who died in 1994.

The charity, which is researching a cure for the disease – the most common cancer in the UK – and helps those suffering from it, is this year celebrating its 25th anniversary.
