DURHAM has been celebrating the 800th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta.

The city is currently hosting a major three-month exhibition centred on its unique 1216 copy of the historic legal document.

In addition, there have been talks, including by television historian David Starkey, and family activities.

Free Magna Carta parties were held for children at the weekend and today (Monday, June 15) Experience Durham’s Northern Lights A Cappella society staged a themed flash mob event in the Market Place.

The Great Charter, a Magna Carta opera, had its world premiere in Durham Cathedral on Saturday night (June 13) and will be performed at Middlesbrough Cathedral this Saturday (June 20).

Durham Cathedral also hosted a special Evensong service on Sunday (June 14), featuring a specially written anthem by Malcolm Archer.

More than 2,000 people visited the Magna Carta and the Changing Face of Revolt exhibition in its first week at Palace Green Library and ten per cent of available tickets for the whole three-month opening have now been sold.
