THE OWNER of a Stockton pub has vowed to gift it to his loyal employees once he has restored its tarnished reputation.

So many diners have cancelled reservations at The Sutton Arms in Elton village since it hit the headlines for multiple hygiene offences that Michael Allan Flegg has had to halve its workforce and is paying out of his own pocket to keep it afloat.

But he is determined to woo back customers and wants to eventually give the pub to his staff as a present so they can enjoy any profits.

Since the first of five inspections in April 2014 to investigate a food poisoning allegation by a member of the public, more than 100,000 meals have been served. However, since the case was brought to court more than a year later, people have stayed away, said Mr Flegg, who has owned the historic building for 32 years.

At Teesside Crown Court this week the 69-year-old pleaded guilty to two offences under General Food Regulations 2014 and a further seven under the Food Safety and Hygiene Regulations 2013 and was ordered to pay £12,620.

“The inspections happened in the middle of a management changeover. We have bought new equipment, tightened up procedures and have brought in some new chefs,” said Mr Flegg.

“It happened 14 months ago, but since it was in the news recently it has gone from being really busy to empty - but I will build it up again. Because of all the cancellations we have had to get rid of 14 out of 28 staff which has been really hard emotionally as they are like part of the family. Everyone knew and respected me so it has just been horrendous.”

Open seven days a week with approximately 100 covers, the pub has a bar, restaurant and bistro dining areas decorated with photographs of jazz musicians and antique curios as well as a secluded beer garden.

“I could retire tomorrow and sell the place, but it’s all about honour. I need to build our reputation up again and then give it to the staff," said Mr Flegg.

“I have endured vicious, personal comments posted by people online from around the world who don't know me but we have to be positive.

"The Sutton Arms is better now than it has ever been, people can come and eat in the kitchen to see for themselves if they want to.”
