Shildon 2 Newton Aycliffe 0.

Shildon won their second cup competition of the season when they beat neighbours Newton Aycliffe with two goals by Billy Greulich-Smith in the Brooks Mileson Northern League cup final at Bishop Auckland tonight.

With the wind behind them in the first half, Shildon had a couple of good chances. Greulich-Smith had a good header saved by Aycliffe keeper James Winter, and Lee Scroggins pulled a chance wide from ten yards.

Aycliffe nearly succeeded in hitting Shildon on the break when Craig Mickle found Paul Garthwaite , whose angled shot was saved by Shildon keeper Lewis Graham.

Winter had a let off just before half time, when he fumbled a Wood effort, but his centre half, Ian Maddison, cleared before anyone could take advantage.

Graham went full stretch at the start of the second half to push Zack Boagey’s low effort around the post, before Shildon took the lead on 51 minutes.

Chris Emms, who was industrious on both wings, crossed perfectly from the right for Greulich-Smith to head firmly into the roof of the net.

Aycliffe nearly levelled immediately, when Danny Hindmarch hit a powerful shot that Graham did well to block waist high to his left.

Shildon went 2-0 up on 65 minutes when Aycliffe failed to clear the ball on the edge of their area, and Greulich-Smith struck a first time right foot shot past Winter.

Maddison had a close range effort cleared off the line as Aycliffe briefly rallied, but after that Shildon comfortably saw the game out.

Shildon also retained the Durham Challenge Cup, and missed out on the title on the very last day of the season.
