PARKED cars are causing problems for people who live opposite a police station.

Residents of Castle View, in Chester-le-Street, complained that police officers' cars were blocking the street and said motorists were showing a lack of respect.

Plastic surgeon Brook Berry, 60, has sent out a leaflet to his neighbours urging them to raise the issue with Durham County Council.

Resident Stuart Johnson, fell foul of the law two years ago when he was arrested, and cautioned on suspicion of criminal damage - Mr Johnson had stuck notices on windscreens of cars in Castle View asking owners not to park there.

Since that incident, and as a result of a petition from Castle View residents, the county council agreed to paint white lines at the entrance of the street, which request motorists to keep clear.

But, because the lines are not legally binding, residents say motorist have ignored them.

Mr Berry said: "The entrance to our street is narrow, the signs may not be legally binding but we feel as if the police and civilian staff from Chester-le-Street police station are showing a lack of respect."

Inspector Paul Anderson, Community Inspector for Chester-le-Street, said: "As long as the vehicles are not causing an obstruction then owners are legally entitled to park in Castle View. Not everyone who parks in the street works for the police, but we have made our staff aware of the strength of feeling among some residents."
