England captain Michael Vaughan admitted England needed to recover quickly from their demoralising six-wicket defeat to New Zealand before they face Canada on Sunday.

After winning the toss New Zealand had England in trouble and only an 81-run stand between Kevin Pietersen (60) and Paul Collingwood (31) and a hard-hitting partnership of 71 from the final 11 overs between Paul Nixon (42not out) and Liam Plunkett (29no) saw England reach a modest 209 for seven.

England claimed three early wickets and had New Zealand in trouble at 72 for four before Scott Styris (87 not out) and Jacob Oram (63no) came together to guide their side to victory with nine overs to spare.

''We've got to pick ourselves up. The target was competitive but a little bit short to be competitive against a good New Zealand team,'' said Vaughan.

''Full credit to Paul Nixon and Liam Plunkett for getting us up to that and giving us a chance. We got some early wickets and thought we could do it.

''The toss was important but we could have played better than we did. It's important that we win those remaining two games because we feel we've got a competitive unit in our side.''

Vaughan confirmed England would field their strongest line-up for tomorrow's match against Canada as they seek the two more wins which will secure their place in the Super Eight.

He said: ''We'll certainly be picking what we feel is our best 11 to beat Canada.

''There will be no thought of playing players just to get practice - we need to win the game and make sure we get our World Cup campaign up and running.''
