TWO young musicians have enjoyed a masterclass with one of Britain’s best known performers, Julian Lloyd Webber.

The renowned cellist spent time with Darlington cello players Alexander Thorne-Wallis, 13, and Amelia Bryant, 12, before taking to the stage at the town’s Civic Theatre for a show looking back at his long career.

Amelia and Alexander each brought along their instruments and were put through their paces by Mr Lloyd Webber in the mini-masterclass after being chosen from a number of young musicians who applied to take part.

The show , An Evening with Julian Lloyd Webber, was a historical and musical look back at the cellist’s life and career, including clips of his past performances and interviews with a number of artists he has worked with through the years, including Andrew Lloyd Webber and violinist Nigel Kennedy.

Mr Lloyd Webber was joined on stage by his wife and fellow cellist Jiaxin Lloyd Webber and pianist Pam Chowan.

Julian Cound, from the theatre, said the chance to spend time with Mr Lloyd Webber had been “a great opportunity” for the two young musicians.

He added: “It was a once in a lifetime chance for both of them. It doesn’t matter how long or short the time together was, it is something that neither of them will forget.”
