A NEWLY refurbished NHS unit for young people age 12 to 18 with serious mental health problems is set to open.

The new-look Newberry Centre, at West Lane Hospital, Middlesbrough, offers 24 hour support, seven days a week to teenagers who mainly come from Darlington, Durham and Teesside.

Staff work closely with patients and their families to design individual care and treatment plans, which also take into account educational needs.

The refurbished building is the second phase of a multi-million rebuilding project at West Lane which is run by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV).

The newly refurbished centre provides facilities including 14 en-suite bedrooms, garden room, games room, American diner, gym, sports facilities and family visiting areas.

Jackie Ennis, head of children and young people’s services at TEWV, said: “The Newberry Centre has always prided itself on being a safe, comfortable place where we can work with young people and their families to help them return to their everyday lives.

“The new facilities at the centre are fantastic and will help us engage even more with the young people who come to us.”
