A PAINTING paying tribute to the heroes of the First World War has been unveiled to the public.

For the last nine months, ex-serviceman and artist, John Palliser, of Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, has been working day and night on his biggest and most emotive painting to date.

Entitled World War 1914 to 1918, the detailed oil painting measures around 180cm by 140cm and was a labour of love on the artist’s part.

At Gateshead Town Hall on Friday ( August 8), the public got the chance to view it for the first time.

He said: I have had so many positive comments. There were a couple of colonels at the ceremony and they told me the painting encapsulates everything they feel about the conflict.”

“It means a lot to me.”

The 56-year-old began working on the painting last year to ensure it would be complete in time for the centenary.

He now hopes to tour the painting across the UK and would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in exhibiting it.
