A CYSTIC fibrosis sufferer is preparing for the challenge of a lifetime when he will attempt to climb the world’s highest mountain.

Nick Talbot, who is originally from Barnard Castle, hopes to become the first person with the condition to climb Mount Everest and raise thousands of pounds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, which is celebrating its 50th year.

The 38-year-old has undergone months of intensive training, both physically and mentally, for the challenge, and new medication has stabilised his health and improved his lung function.

Mr Talbot, who now lives in London, has raised £30,000 for the charity so far but is aiming to reach £100,000.

He said: “My parents have always encouraged me to do outdoor sports and spend time in the mountains.

“Over the years, I have pushed myself and my boundaries to see what I could do and gradually climbed higher and higher.

“In 2011, on the second attempt, I reached the summit of the sixth highest mountain in the world - Cho Oyu.

“With the training and severe challenges which come at altitude, every step and breath was a challenge.

“For me this was only for a month or so, but the more serious sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis, they face this every day of their lives and ultimately have to hope for a lung transplant.”
