FOUR people are in hospital with serious injuries after an early morning crash which closed the A1.

A van and a lorry collided on the northbound carriageway between the junctions with the A61 at Baldersby and the A168 near Dishforth, North Yorkshire at 4.30am.

All four occupants of the van were taken to Harrogate District Hospital.

The lorry driver, who was not injured, was arrested and taken to Harrogate Police Station.

The crash closed both carriageways of the A1 until 10.45am, causing major disruption for motorists. Traffic was queuing for more than a mile in both directions on the A1 while diversions were put in place.
