TWO students from Stokesley Sixth Form College are planning a trip to South Africa to teach sports and work in an orphanage.

Emma Hughes and Dustin Talkington, from Carlton-in-Cleveland, near Stokesley, need to raise £10,000 between them for the trip, which will begin on September 1 next year.

Miss Hughes said she was excited about going and was looking forward to meeting the people and seeing the wildlife and landscape.

During the three-month trip to Port Elizabeth, organised by Gap Sports Abroad, Mr Talkington will teach football.

Miss Hughes will spend her first seven weeks in one of Port Elizabeth's orphanages then teach swimming Monday to Friday for the last five weeks.

She said: "I do quite a bit of swimming. I think it is such a nice skill if you can swim. It is one of those basic skills that everybody should learn.

"There are about 1,000 drownings a year in South Africa. People come from poor backgrounds and they do not have the money to get out and learn these skills."

The pair will have their evenings and weekends free, and Miss Hughes wants to use some of the time to take part in extreme sports. She said: "I am really interested in sharks and I really want to do some shark diving there. I will go and see what's what there and give anything a go."
