BORO fans who ignore a smoking ban will be ejected from the ground - and could face a 12-month match ban.

Smoking supporters will face the boot from the Riverside, at this weekend's game with Manchester United.

The Riverside became a smoke-free zone at the start of last season, a move that had the support of the vast majority of the club's fans, together with Middlesbrough Council and the local primary care trust.

A small number of smokers are refusing to obey the ban, despite requests from stewards and fellow supporters, along with announcements made via the stadium's TV screens, message board and PA system.

Terry Tasker, Head of Stadium Operations, said: "Signs have now been erected around the stadium stating that those who continue to smoke will face immediate ejection, seizure of their match or season tickets and potentially a 12-month stadium ban.

"We have received an ever-increasing number of complaints from fans upset and annoyed to find the toilets full of smoke due to the actions of those who feel they are above the rules.'' Determined to stub out on the habit by a hardcore of smokers of gathering in the stadium toilets to light up, following complaints from supporters and club staff.

Mr Tasker said: "We don't feel it's asking too much of them to go without a cigarette for 90 minutes.

"In any case, from April next year, it will be illegal to smoke in a public building like the Riverside and Police will hand out 80 on-the-spot fines for those who ignore the law. Now is the time to stop."

Several Premier League clubs follow suit, has resulted in the stadium's concourses and restaurants having a far more pleasant and healthy atmosphere.
