A MAN who racially abused a shopkeeper was yesterday jailed for seven months.

Mark Anthony Myers subjected the manager of CB News, in Chilton, to a drunken torrent of racial abuse while he was in the shop on October 31.

Myers, 27, of Tudhoe Moor Estate, Spennymoor, was caught on CCTV shouting racist slurs at Arshad Mahmood non-stop for seven minutes.

Magistrates sitting at Newton Aycliffe heard that at one point, Myers removed his jacket in a threatening manner and said he would shoot Mr Mahmood.

As he left the shop, Myers caused criminal damage to Mr Mahmood's car, which was parked nearby.

Myers pleaded guilty to charges of racially-aggravated threatening behaviour and criminal damage, for which he was sentenced to four months custody, each to run concurrently.

He was sentenced to a further three months in prison after admitting he had breached a suspended sentence imposed by the court at an earlier date.
