VOLUNTEERS who work all year to raise money for cancer research have handed over their latest cheque for £32,000.

They gave it to Professor Roger Griffin, a specialist from Newcastle, during a Christmas fair at Cotherstone, near Barnard Castle.

He said it was a wonderful donation by members of the Teesdale branch of Cancer Research UK, which would support the great efforts being made by his team to beat the disease.

Maureen Bainbridge, chairwoman of the branch, thanked all the members and other local supporters.

One of the biggest sums was more than £2,000 from Ian Douglas, of Cotherstone, who organised regular coach trips with Alan and Sandra Burrell.
