A LONG-distance love for his home football club will see one fan and his son travel thousands of miles to share in the biggest game of its history.

Michael Davies lived in Spennymoor, County Durham, and regularly watched the town football team play at the Brewery Field ground until he moved to America with his wife, Angela, 20 years ago.

On Saturday (Saturday, May 4) he will travel 3,275 miles from his home in Boston, Massachusetts, to watch the team play Tunbridge Well in the FA Carlsberg Vase final, at Wembley.

Mr Davies still keeps in touch with the team’s performance via the internet and family.

His son Campbell, 14, and daughter Olivia, 11, are big football fans too. Father and son have visited St James' Park, Newcastle, to watch games and the pair will meet family and friends on Saturday to see their first game at the iconic national stadium.

The Northern Echo:

FAMILY FANS: Michael and Campbell Davies, who will travel from the US to watch Spennymoor Town, with Angela and Olivia Davies

Barbara Mason, Michael’s mother, who lives in Spennymoor, said: “They are making a special trip from America to see the game.

“Campbell has never seen Spennymoor play, but he’s followed them on the internet.

“When they got to the semi-finals he told his dad he had to get tickets if they reached the final.

“Campbell is very excited and the trip over shows their dedication to Spennymoor.

“Michael might have moved to America, but he has not forgotten his roots.”

Yesterday, The Northern Echo reported on another lifelong Moors fan, John Oxenham, making a mammoth journey from Moscow to support the team.

Closer to home, one generous fan donated two tickets to the club to give to fans who otherwise could not afford to pay to watch the team at Wembley.

Accountant Geoff O'Hehir (CORR) donated his original tickets after deciding to upgrade to a corporate package.

Mr O'Hehir said: "The club getting to Wembley is just fantastic and I'm thrilled. I’m happy to donate the tickets to help out other fans.”

Billy Beasley, a club director, said: “I think it's an absolutely wonderful gesture, and kind of sums the guy up."

Tickets for the FA Carlsberg Vase Final Spennymoor v Tunbridge Wells cost £15 adults and £5 under-16s from TheFA.com/tickets or 0844-980-0656. Return coach travel is £20 from the Wembley Club Shop next to Spennymoor Town Hall, open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, or from spennymoortownfc.co.uk.
