MEMBERS of a centre for adults with disabilities and learning difficulties are taking part in a sponsored walk to help a sick child.

People who attend the Ebony Day Centre, in Leadgate, are undertaking the three-mile challenge to Oxhill, in Stanley, and back.

Next Friday’s event involves about 20 people, including some in wheelchairs and is in aid of the Fraja Ellie Appeal.

The appeal aims to raise £500,000 to send the five-year-old from Leeming, North Yorkshire, whose family are originally from Consett, to the US for cancer treatment.

Centre administrator Shannon Burns said: “The centre users chose a different charity every year. This one is personal to do some of them because Fraja was local and they know her.”

Previous sponsored walks have raised money for the Great North Air Ambulance and Help for Heroes.
