A £10m shopping park revamp could create 200 jobs.
The owners of Clifton Moor Retail Park on the outskirts of York have unveiled plans to demolish a section of the complex and build five new units along a “retail terrace”.
Clifton Moor Ltd has submitted a planning application for the scheme to City of York Council and says it is holding talks with “bulky goods” retailers – such as those selling furniture and electrical items – about moving to the centre.
If the project goes ahead, mezzanine floors would be installed to add an extra 2,360sqm of shopping space and a decision expected to be made in June.
A cover over a pedestrian walkway near the centre’s Tesco superstore would be demolished to improve the visibility of the new stores and raise their profile - which the prospective retailers have said must happen if they are to move to Clifton Moor.
Planning agents Blue Sky said the new retailers – whose names have yet to be confirmed – expected to employ local people and run a recruitment advertising campaign before opening.
It said they wanted premises which were easily accessible by car and allowed them to “piggyback” each other by keeping shoppers in one location.
