THE Peugeot 208 is up against some stiff competition.

Taking on the likes of VW's Polo and Ford's Fiesta is not for the faint-hearted.

But the current version of the marque's best-selling car is up for the fight.

Just look at the design - this is not a car made by people who are prepared to just 'make do'.

From the purposeful front to the sculpted sides, it's a car that wants to be noticed. Clearly a Peugeot - echoing design cues from other cars in the stable, it is also individualistic enough to stand out from the crowd.

There are a host of engines to choose from, starting with the 1.2L PureTech 82 and running through to the most powerful offering, the 1.2L PureTech 110 - named 'International Engine of the Year' in 2015, 2016 and 2017 - and it's available in either three or five-door versions.

Peugeot say the Puretech engines strike the 'perfect balance between torque and power at low revs'.

The BlueHDi engines, meanwhile, combine high performance, impressive fuel economy and low CO₂ emissions.

Every diesel 208 emits under 97 g/km of CO₂ and achieves up to 76.3 mpg on a combined drive cycle.

The range of 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engines comes with Stop & Start technology.

You would expect a city car to be able to handle narrow roads and parking spaces with aplomb and the Peugeot is certainly up to the task, being a nimble mover in an urban environment.

In terms of technology, the 208 is well-equipped, offering the likes of Park Assist, colour reversing camera, Active City Brake and a 7ins touchscreen with 3D satellite navigation.

The interior is modern and fresh and appears robust enough to stand the test of time or at least until the kids have matured enough to just sit still and look out the window.

Available in Active, Signature, Tech and GT Line models, prices start at £14,315 on the road for the 1.2L PureTech 82 S&S in Active form and go up to £18,065 for the 1.2L PureTech 110 EAT6 S&S GT Line car.

All vehicles are also available on Just Add Fuel - a one stop three-year finance package that includes three years’ insurance, warranty, servicing, car tax and roadside assistance.
