DESPITE the pressures of social media, women are now, more than ever, opting for the minimalist look when it comes to make-up – over a third of women in the region opt for natural make-up to make themselves look younger.

The findings from beauty experts Cosmetify.com, which analysed the beauty habits of women across the UK, reveal that 80 per cent of women in Newcastle wear only up to five beauty products (including moisturiser) to achieve their daytime look. Mascara is the top go-to product, with 69 per cent of women saying it’s their number one item.

Top five go-to beauty products:

1. Mascara (69%)

2. Foundation (68%)

3. Blusher (55%)

4. Concealer (41%)

5. Lipstick (36%)

However, the findings also reveal that make-up hygiene is still a problem for some: over a third say they don’t always remove make-up before going to bed.

Isa Lavahun of Cosmetify.com explains the importance of always removing make-up at the end of the day: “Throughout the day, bacteria builds up on the skin and this, along with oily substances found in a lot of products, can clog pores. That’s why it’s so important to wash your face at the end of the day. Not only will this help to reduce the risk of blemishes and blackheads, it also allows your skin to breathe.”

The findings also show that more than 75 per cent don’t clean their brushes on a weekly basis as advised by experts. Lavahun says: “In addition to ensuring you properly take off your make-up before going to bed, care is also needed when it comes to applying products. Bacteria builds up in the bristles, which can cause acne breakouts. Generally, it is advised that brushes are cleaned every week using shampoo and water."

Dip the tips

AT Palmer/Harding's London Fashion Week show, lead nail technician Karen Louise said she was, "updating the classic French manicure with a more playful spin, incorporating diagonal lines with pops of colour." To create the look, start with a nude base then paint across your nail tips with deep blue or bright red. You don't have to be super-neat with your lines, it's about a fun flash of colour, not precision nail art.
