CHECK out our gallery of aerial photos taken across North Yorkshire and the North-East in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, plus some at classics at ground level.
This aerial photograph of Richmond was taken in the mid-1960s. At the top is the castle and at the bottom is the gasworks. The gasworks frontages can still be seen today. To share your photos, email jo.kelly@newsquest.co.uk
Yarm in 1967. This photo was taken by Colin Simister, who was a freelance photographer for The Northern Echo
Whitby from the air in 1970. Tony Marshall, who sent us this photo to share with our readers, said: “This photo was taken by Colin Simister, who was a freelance photographer that The Northern Echo used in the 1960s and 1970s. Colin had a friend with his own plane and often went with him on his flights. I remember there was a craze of having your house or farm snapped from above during that time. Now Google Earth and drones have taken over that role”
Thanks to Tony Marshall for this photo of Thirsk from the air in about the 1950s or 1960s, judging by the vehicles parked in the Market Place. It was a copy of one that was used to be in the old Police Station
An amazing aerial photograph of Darlington town centre in 1951, which was sent to us for use by Jimmy Blumer.
