IF you like reading about the history of North of England, this is the book for you.

Written by WR Mitchell, MBE, retired editor of Cumbria Magazine, this is a new local history book that brings to life the unique past of the Eden Valley. The book covers a physical area from the Roman Wall county in the north, down to the Yorkshire Dales National Park in the south and includes the valley itself, the river Eden, Carlisle, the North Pennines and the Lake District.

Fifteen chapters deal with everything in ancient and modern history that make the valley what it is today - the physical setting, early settlements, great local families, farm life, market towns and modern times. Particular interest is provided by the highly informative passages on the famous stone circle known as Long Meg and Her Daughters, for instance, or the medieval forest of Inglewood which vanished long ago, or the curious hogback gravestones left by the Vikings.

The book is illustrated with 148 photographs, as well as copies of old paintings and drawings from past centuries.
