HERE is a selection of pictures from the "Darlington: Pubs" section of The Northern Echo's photo archive. But these are all lost pubs, from the beginning of the alphabet.

How many of them can you locate - the answers are at the foot of the page.

And how many of them can you tell us anything about?

Any memories (a couple of them closed a long time ago)? Any pictures? And any we've missed between A and H? Please email chris.lloyd@nne.co.uk if you've got anything to add.

The locations

The Central Borough had five addresses: it was Nos 1, 3 and 5 Farrer Street and Nos 11 and 12 Hopetown Lane.

The Bowes was in Skinnergate, next to the Mechanics Institute.

We think the Alexandre may have been in the Rise Carr area.

The Burns was on the junction of Northgate and Kendrew Street and so is beneath Northgate House.

The Coachman Hotel is at the top of Victoria Road beside the official front entrance to Bank Top station - presumably it was built to compliment the opening of the station in 1887.

The Cleaver was in Skinnergate - Argos was on its site until recently.

The Cricketers was enlarged about 30 years ago but now stands empty beside the inner ring road on the junction with Parkgate.

The Fleece was at the Blackwellgate end of High Row, where Boyes is today.

The Golden Lion was in Brunswick Street, off the inner ring road.

And, of course, the Havelock Arms was on Haughton Road at the entrance to Albert Hill.
