HERE we delve into The Northern Echo archive to see how the last generation rebuilt the A1 in the 1960s and 1970s in the Scotch Corner area.

HOTEL VIEW: Looking south down the old dual carriageway at Scotch Corner in July 1970 from a hotel window.

The petrol station directly beneath us is where the AA had its phone box. In the centre of the picture on the southbound carriageway is the Dalesway Hotel, which must have been empty for a decade or more.

We had always assumed that it was an unappealing modern construction, but this picture suggests it was a sprawl of more interesting older buildings, originally called the Crown and Anchor Inn.

On the right hand side of the picture, on the northbound carriageway, you can just make out some buildings which are on the junction with the road down to Skeeby and Richmond.

Here, too, was an old travellers' pub, called the Blue Anchor.

These must be beneath the roundabout that now takes the A6108 off to Richmond.
