CD REVIEWS

Enrico Pieranunzi & Marc Johnson/Yellow & Blue Suites (Challenge Jazz CHR70131)

This is a lovely album featuring just piano and double bass. It’s beautifully played and comes from a concert recorded for Radio Suisse Romande in Lausanne in 1990. The two suites combine the musicians’ own improvisations with some standards including I should care and Yesterdays. I don’t why its issue has been delayed, but it’s a pleasure to have it now.

Michael Mantler/Concertos (ECM 178 0371)

Mantler’s first CD for seven years successfully combines jazz and classical forms featuring soloists from very wide ranging backgrounds such as Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and classical pianist Majella Stockhausen. The seven concertos each feature a different instrument and soloist, all backed by the talented Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, with impressive contributions in particular by trombonist Roswell Rudd and marimba/vibes player Pedro Carneiro.
