CHART-toppers from the 1970s will headline a festival of music in County Durham this summer.

Rock and pop band Mungo Jerry, which enjoyed two number one hits and seven other UK charting singles, will take to the stage at the Durham Blues, Rhythm and Rock Festival in June.

Organised by Solid Entertainments, the festival is now in its ninth year and will be held at Chilton Country Pub and Hotel, at Chilton Moor, near Houghton-le-Spring.

Veteran group Mungo Jerry will follow a line-up of five bands from around the UK and further afield.

A festival spokesperson said: “This will undoubtedly be another great festival and one live music event not to miss in the North-East.

“With this calibre of artist stepping on stage, festival goers can expect to see top class live performances and hear a number of memorable tunes and new songs with sets that incorporate a creative mix of blues, rock, rhythm and blues and a sprinkling of jazz.”

Mungo Jerry’s In The Summertime was one of the fastest selling singles of all time - reaching number one within a fortnight of its release and remaining in place for seven weeks.

The record became a global hit and made its composer, lead singer and front man, Ray Dorset, aka Mungo Jerry, into an overnight international star.

The band went onto enjoy more success and since the millennium Ray Dorset has maintained his reputation with more releases - securing Mungo Jerry performances on festival stages across the world.

Also performing at this year’s festival in County Durham is the Connie Lush Band.

The blues singer is five-time winner of best UK vocalist, twice European Blues vocalist of the year and has performed at some of Europe’s most prestigious festivals.

Meanwhile audiences are warned to expect anything from John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett.

“Be prepared for everything from bare-chested theremin playing to wah wah wheelie bin as the duo jump from one hit and 40 near misses to another,” added the spokesperson.

The Cinelli Brothers, Marco and Alessandro Cinelli, champion a new generation of passionate musicians sharing a love of blues, soul and R&B while Gary Grainger’s current sets include a mixture of traditional and modern blues tunes.

Finally, Connor Selby Band is inspired by musicians that emerged in the 1960s citing Eric Clapton as his first and current major influence.

The bar will be open and onsite parking is available.

The festival will take place from 2pm to 10pm on Saturday, June 15. For details and tickets visit durhambluesfestival.co.uk
