PERFORMERS from across the globe will perform in a new drama exploring the concept of ‘home’ at Durham’s Gala Theatre later this month.

Where We Began combines storytelling, movement and live music in a performance about the history of migration and will visit Gala on Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 September as part of a tour of the North East.

Stand and Be Counted Theatre presents the show and is committed to making work with, about and for those seeking sanctuary in the UK and internationally.

Tafadzwa Muchenje (Taf), a Zimbabwe-born artist will perform in Where We Began alongside Greek, Persian, Brazilian and British performers. Each will share accounts of displacement, challenging the audience’s idea of ‘home’ and exploring the free movement of people.

Taf was born in Zimbabwe, brought up in South Africa and at the age of 10 moved with his family to the UK on a Highly Skilled Migrant Visa. Since turning 21 he has been faced with deportation, meaning separation from his family, partner and friends.

He is currently unable to work, continue his studies, hold a passport or travel.

Rosie MacPherson, artistic director of Stand and Be Counted, said: “Taf came to one of our previous shows and was visibly affected by the performance. When we met with him, we discovered the reason for his distress lay in his struggles to remain in the UK and fight for his citizenship. He draws deeply on his own experiences and situation in the role he plays.”

n Tickets for Where We Began cost £12 (£10 concession) and are available to book online at www.galadurham.co.uk by calling 03000 266 600 or in person at the box office.
