MY expectations were high when I went to watch Crazy for You at Sunderland’s Empire Theatre on Tuesday night. This was purely because the last production I saw at the venue was one of the best musicals I have ever seen.

However, I am happy to say the show, starring Strictly Come Dancing winner and actor Tom Chambers, West End favourite Charlotte Wakefield and television and theatre star Claire Sweeney, proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I must admit, it took me a little while to get into it and I cannot put my finger on why. Perhaps it was hearing the slightly exaggerated American accents on people I knew to be English, or some of the earlier comedy moments that made me cringe?

But after 20 minutes, I was well and truly hooked, transported back to the golden age of Broadway and rooting for the show’s hero, Bobby Child, on his quest to save a Nevada theatre and win the heart of the owner’s daughter.

I think what stands out in Crazy for You is the dancing and choreography. Chambers has lost none of the talents that saw him crowned Strictly champion in 2008, and Wakefield certainly matched him for skills and energy.

The supporting cast was exceptional - dancing, singing and playing a wealth of different musical instruments. Sweeney’s solo was another highpoint, with her character oozing old school glamour and feistiness.

I am not sure if I am crazy about Crazy for You but it certainly lived up to its promise as a feel-good musical.
