A WATER group said it plans to spend £33m on its pipe network.

Yorkshire Water said today that it aimed to improve the resilience of its pipes to cope with extreme temperatures following the harsh winter.

The firm said the programme should enable it to significantly cut the number of leaks and bursts by replacing old mains in areas prone to problems, using technology to control water pressure and inspecting 32,000 km's of pipes.

It may also use GPS technology to enable it to react faster to reports of leaks and added that the investment would not impact on customer bills.

The firms chief executive Richard Flint said: "It is important that we improve our leakage levels and the £33m investment programme will see us taking pro-active steps towards this goal.

"We will have increased numbers of employees out in the region actively looking for leaks and fixing them.

"The technology that we are using will give us an even better picture of the underground network helping us to pinpoint how and where water is escaping so that we can respond quickly."
