A COMPANY’S development centre has won an award for its creation of a cordless vacuum cleaner.

The Black & Decker European research and development centre in Green Lane, Spennymoor, County Durham, won the Plus X prize, awarded by a panel of judges sitting in Germany, for Pivot Plus.

Brian Wadge, 38, from Coxhoe, County Durham, who started as an apprentice with the company, was one of the team working on the project.

He said: “I am delighted to be part of the team that helped achieve this success.

It was a real team effort, combining innovative thinking and sound engineering know-how.”

Team member, industrial designer Graeme Crawley, 26, of Newcastle, who came to the company after completing his degree at Northumbria University, said: “We knew we needed a new product and considered a number of ideas. The result is something very different from other cleaners on the market.

“It really is an example of innovative thinking.”
