PLANS for a six-star hotel and leisure development in the region are closer to fruition following the appointment of an architect.

Niven Architects, based in Darlington, has started work on the three-phase programme at the site of the former Tall Trees hotel and nightclub, in Yarm, near Stockton.

Site owner Javed Majid wants to develop a six-star hotel and leisure complex, as well as 250 homes, after being granted outline planning permission in 2006.

Niven Architects, based in Coniscliffe Road, is working with quantity surveyor Maurice Daley on the project.

Simon Crowe, director of Niven Architects, said: “This is a particularly ambitious plan for the Tall Trees complex by the owner, Mr Majid, and we are thrilled to be involved.

“While it is by no means the biggest project we have worked on, we will be dedicating architects and technicians to the scheme, which will result in a transformation of the existing site.”

A spokesman for Tall Trees said: “This unprecedented project allows us to provide outstanding new levels of luxury, opulence and splendour.

“The finished article will be breathtaking and we look forward to working closely with Niven Architects to realise this amazing dream.”

The first phase will see a new entrance pavilion for the hotel, which will be redeveloped with two new wings providing an additional 70 bedrooms, restaurants, bars, conferencing facilities and a health and leisure club.

Guests will be able to use a swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms, three Jacuzzis and a hydro-pool.

The next stage will see the building of two four-storey apartment blocks – each with 125 properties offering two, three or four bedrooms – to replace the nightclub.

The final phase will see the development of a spa and conference centre, along with penthouse apartments overlooking the river.
