A FIRM that specialises in making bespoke staircases had completed a hat-trick at a prestigious design awards.

Helmsley-based Bisca has won the Designer Maker category in the 2020 Northern Design Awards, making it the third time that the company has won in the regional awards scheme.

Beating a host of impressive entries, Bisca secured the win by demonstrating the high level of design and craftsmanship that goes into every staircase they build.

Recent highlights created by the company include a free-standing staircase with floating treads, an elliptical helical stair for Belvelly Castle in Cork, Ireland, and a stacked spiral staircase made in solid ash and forged steel into a new basement.

Each staircase is individually designed for every project and built entirely in the company’s own workshop in Helmsley, North Yorkshire.

Every staircase is the handiwork of a dedicated team of multi-skilled craftspeople who work across a whole range of disciplines.

Their skills include metalwork, cabinetmaking, blacksmithing, stitching and polishing and the company prides itself of marrying century-old skills with modern technology to create truly unique staircases.

Design director Richard McLane said: “Recognition of great design is always appreciated.

"I think it is especially valued by the whole Bisca team.

"It is a privilege to be working with a team of designers and craftspeople who love their work and care passionately about producing stunning staircases for our customers.”

The company designs and makes staircases for residential and commercial properties all over the UK as well as internationally.
