A BUSY industrial estate is set to be extended under council plans.

The Skippers Lane Industrial Estate, in South Bank, Teesside, has proved a popular location for many businesses over the years.

A former allotment site belonging to Redcar and Cleveland Council will be now be used to create eight new industrial units, subject to planning permission.

Approval is being sought from the council’s cabinet for phase one of the proposed development, which will involve £2.8m worth of infrastructure works and a new roundabout being built.

A meeting of the growth, enterprise and environment scrutiny committee heard that there was high demand for units on the site.

The industrial estate was also described as being in an excellent position in terms of connections to nearby routes.

Councillor Sue Jeffrey, who represents the South Bank ward for Labour, welcomed the plans and said: “This is a very popular industrial estate and most crucially of all it provides local employment close to where people live.”
